Protecting Horses and Riders on Caldy Roads

The British Horse Society’s (BHS) Dead Slow campaign, launched to educate drivers on how to safely pass horses on the road, is gaining traction in our community. Recently, an effort was made to increase awareness in Caldy about the dangers horses and riders face on our lanes, particularly due to drivers who may not know the safe way to pass.

With three local police officers now riding horses along our roads, they’ve had firsthand experience with the challenges that inconsiderate or unaware drivers can pose. Unfortunately, incidents of fast or close passing have become all too common. This behavior not only puts riders and their horses at risk but also compromises safety for everyone on the road.

The Dead Slow campaign provides essential guidelines for drivers:

  1. Slow down to 10 mph when approaching horses.

  2. Be patient—don’t honk or rev the engine.

  3. Pass the horse wide and slow, leaving at least a car's width if possible.

  4. Drive away slowly without sudden acceleration.

  5. At least 2m distance if possible.

Following these simple steps can prevent accidents and foster a safer, more respectful road environment for all. We’ll be sharing more detailed guidance and tips soon. Let’s work together to keep our lanes safe and ensure that both people and animals feel secure while sharing the road in Caldy.
