Parking Charges
The proposal by Wirral Council to introduce parking charges along South Parade in West Kirby, and at previously free car parks in Hoylake, Meols, and Thurstaston, has sparked significant opposition. Under the plan, drivers would pay £1.20 per hour, up to £6 daily, and an additional £1 overnight from 6.30 pm to 8 am.
Local councillors and community groups, including One West Kirby, are concerned these charges could harm local businesses and increase congestion in residential streets as visitors avoid paid parking areas. They argue the council should seek long-term solutions to support local businesses rather than imposing additional fees.
To voice these concerns, campaigners have launched a petition urging residents to oppose the new charges. The petition highlights the potential economic strain on local high streets and the adverse effects on community accessibility. It calls for a balanced approach that addresses financial needs without compromising business vitality or community convenience. Residents and businesses are encouraged to sign and protect the unique character of our towns from policies that may ultimately undermine them.
